The term 'Sceach' can cause some naming confusion as it means both Whitethorn specifically and thorn-bushes more generally.
Coming from the Old Irish 'Scé' (thornbush / whitethorn) which is in turn derived from Proto-Celtic skʷiyats (whitethorn), the term has it's oldest traceable linguistic ancestor in the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European root skwey- , meaning 'Thorn, Needle, or Prickly Plant'.
With Proto-Indo-European language believed to have been spoken as far back as the late Neolithic era, it's likely that some iteration of the word 'Sceach' has been used to describe this thorned companion for over 6,000 years
The combination of 'Sceach' with 'Gheal' does away with any naming ambiguity and refers to whitethorn specifically. The 'Gheal' of the name comes from 'Geal', the modern iteration of Old Irish 'Gel', meaning 'White, Bright, Shining'.
Another beautifully descriptive phrase for the bright and shining Sceach is 'Bláth Bán na Bealtaine' - the white flower of May.
