PÚICÍN GAOITHE Mounted Print
An Púicín Gaoithe - Falco Tinnunculus - the Kestrel.
Known as Gaeilge as 'Seabhac Gaoithe' (wind hawk), 'Seabhac Buí' (yellow hawk), 'Pocaire Gaoithe' (wind frolicker), and, a bit less poetically 'Bodaire Gaoithe' (wind lout).
The translation of 'Púicín Gaoithe' depends on whether the root word of the diminutive 'Púicín' is taken as 'Púca' (as in Dineen's dictionary) or 'Púic' (as in Ó Dónaill's), and can mean 'little pooka of the wind' or 'little masked one of the wind' accordingly.
Inspired by the possible 'Púca' root, I've drawn this Púicín Gaoithe perched atop an Old Irish Goat horn, to link it to the mischievous Púca - a spirit which is known to shapeshift into the form of a goat at times. But 'little masked one of the wind' is just as fitting a phrase for this stunningly marked wind frolicker.
